Treatments for Cardiovascular Conditions Include Medications and Surgery

Treatment for most cardiovascular conditions includes a combination of two or more therapies. For instance, patients with coronary heart disease may receive medications to help alleviate symptoms and prevent complications, surgery to widen or bypass clogged coronary arties, and specific diet and lifestyle instructions to help undo as much reversible damage as possible.

Each patient¡¯s unique treatment plan will depend on a number of factors, such as his or her specific diagnosis, the type of symptoms the condition is causing, how severe these symptoms are, and how the patient has responded to previous treatments. Treatment can also vary based on the patient¡¯s age, lifestyle, and any other medications he or she is taking for unrelated conditions.

The most common types of treatment for cardiovascular conditions include:

  • Medications to help lower cholesterol or blood pressure, prevent blood clots or decrease the chance of experiencing a heart attack
  • An angioplasty (surgery to repair or unblock an artery), with or without the placement of a stent to keep the artery open afterward
  • Dietary adjustments (e.g., reducing the consumption of fat and cholesterol and increasing the consumption of vegetables and fiber) and increased physical activity
  • Interventional radiology services, such as radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of arrhythmiasTampa General Hospital has been named one of America's Best Hospitals for Cardiology & Heart Surgery by U.S. News & World Report for 2020-2021.
  • Rehabilitative care, including physical therapy and occupational therapy, in the case of a heart attack or stroke
  • Transplantation, if all other treatments fail and the patient is facing a significantly shortened life expectancy (provided all other transplant candidate requirements are met)
